The Dustcloud

THE DUSTCLOUD is a safe, mobile, first-person shooter game played with GPS tracking and electronic guns called DUSTERS. It’s an urban game that can be played anywhere, by anyone, at any time, and we have adapted it for web and mobile technology. In the long-term, we are interested in developing for wearable computing. Think laser tag in the street, with headset graphics. To understand what we are doing, take a look at these three short, endearingly low-budget videos. Best watched in sequence, from left to right.

The location-based game we built in Prague, demonstrating the original game engine and the GPS tracking.

In which we introduce our prototype Dusters, and provide a quick demonstration of how the technology works.

The iPhone app video, in which we add alliances, alert messaging and mobile maps to the game.

The original DUSTCLOUD HQ was a small, dysfunctional bar in a narrow, Harry Potteresque street in Old Town Prague, where we staged a series of test games in 2012, destroying nine of the twelve Dusters we rapid prototyped (back when rapid prototyping was expensive). The following year, we moved our base of operations to Berlin and concentrated on developing version 2.0 Dusters for widescale mobile gameplay. From August 1 to November 1, 2013, we ate a lot of rice and drank a lot of street beer in Shenzhen, China as part of the HAXLR8R hardware accelerator program. The plan was to learn how to direct-source, assemble and manufacture our hardware directly from the Chinese component shops and factories. You can meet the guys who developed the game HERE. If you would like to receive one of the first 1,000 dusters, or would like more information about The Dustcloud or Urban Gameplay in general, please send us an Invitation Request (above) or join our Mailing List (below), and, even though we’re pretty dubious about this whole blogging caper, we’ll diligently blog and tumbl and tweet and upload photos of DUSTER DEV in order to keep you up to date with out latest developments. Better still, go to our CROWDFUNDING page and check the incentives we’re offering in exchange for your support. Back us on Kickstarter for as little as $39, and we’ll ship you a 2.0 Duster from China, send you an Android or iOS app (below) so you can tether your Duster to your phone and keep track of your stats and alliances, and give you an Agent login code so you can upload your codename, profile and dossier to the Dustcloud. From there, you can form teams, defend your turf, and get busy dusting rival Agents – you know you want to!
